Plastic cutting boards and SS knives - slivering

It occurred to me that when plastic cutting boards are used, microscopic slivers of plastic can be removed from the board and ingested. What effect will it have? Acrylic, for example, is fairly hard and can be sharp. Could it puncture or lodge itself in the stomach/intestine wall?

Wooden boards will likewise sliver, but wood is biodegradable and should not persist inside tissues for long, unlike the plastic.

On a similar issue, what happens when a burr from a knife's edge breaks off and ends up in your food? Stainless steel might take a long time to break down if it should lodge itself in the digestive tract.
